The first Irish national survey to benchmark the level of Building Information Modelling (BIM) adoption in Ireland, undertaken by CitA in partnership with Enterprise Ireland, has just been released. There is positive news for BIM professionals, the construction industry and its clients.

According to new research, 67% of the industry sample possessed confidence in their skills and knowledge to deliver BIM. 27% reported that they have knowledge of BIM, and are gradually improving their BIM skills. This is encouraging news for the Irish construction industry and its clients.

The research sample size consisted of one hundred influential leaders in architecture, engineering and construction contracting which were selected with the co-operation of industry representative bodies. 90% of survey respondents stated their role as being either Director, Principal, or Associate level within their company.

75% of the research sample identified a demand for BIM. ‘Have you ideas on how your industry representative body (ACEI, CIF, RIAI, SCSI, Engineers Ireland) could support the industry adoption of BIM?’ was a question asked in the survey. A theme in the feedback for this question was the need for more Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training, integrated workshops, Irish BIM case studies and guidance material in the use of BIM on outstanding projects.

The first national survey to benchmark the level of BIM adoption in Ireland revealed that 67% of the industry sample possessed confidence in their skills and knowledge to deliver BIM.

CitA has been at the core of BIM education, training and research in Ireland. 85% of respondents reported that they were aware of CitA’s work in promoting BIM.

The survey feedback received appears to be a collective call for Irish professional representative bodies to start viewing BIM more seriously, and lobby the Irish government to take a stance on its applicability in Ireland.

The report of the survey was prepared by Dr Alan Hore, Founding Director of CitA and John Hunt, Enterprise Ireland. The research was undertaken in partnership with the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland, Engineers Ireland, Construction Industry Federation, Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland and Construction IT Alliance (CITA).

This research is good news for the Irish construction industry with BIM growing in popularity in the global construction industry. In order to assist with the growth of BIM in Ireland, Enterprise Ireland has announced a new two year BIM partnership with Construction IT Alliance (CitA).
